Key Responsibilities
- Analyze patients’ records (like doctor’s notes, test results, and treatments) and record all the important information accurately before heading towards the coding process.
- Reviewing patient records and documentation carefully to identify any missing information, and ensure to communicate with doctors or healthcare staff to clarify if any.
- Convert patient medical information into standardized codes such as ICD-10, CPT, and OPCS, ensuring accuracy to maintain the billing, insurance, and medical records.
- Train other healthcare professionals on how to document a procedure properly so it can be coded correctly and comply with clinical coding guidelines.
- Regularly checking patient medical charts to make sure all information, diagnoses, and procedures are accurately recorded and coded.
- Report to the supervisor about any issues or malfunctions with medical equipment and computer programs for uninterrupted workflow and patient care.
- Assigning the correct codes to all patient services and arranging them in the proper sequence for accurate billing and record-keeping.
Requirements
- A degree in health information technology, medical coding, or a related field.
- 2+ years of work experience as a medical coder.
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and clinical coding standards.
- Proficiency in organizational and computer skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Practical experience using electronic systems to manage records and insurance claims.
