12 Hot Seat Questions For Interview

Your recruiter will ask you hot seat questions in a way that naturally tests your communication skills and professionalism. They might unexpectedly follow up with a tough question right after you have successfully answered one that gave you a good opportunity to present yourself well. We have arranged a list of questions for the hot seat in the toughest hierarchy a recruiter could ask to test your mindset. In our examples, we would assume the hiring manager interviewing a creative lead.

Before we move on to the best hot seat questions, know that only 7% of communication is the actual message, while 38% is voice tone and 55% is body language. So, take a moment to think before you reply. It’s okay to take a deep breath if you need to. Focus on your body language and tone. Example

I’m a creative lead with 6 years of experience in graphic design, branding, and digital marketing. In my last company, one of the projects I managed, yielded a 30% boost in brand awareness. There are other examples of my successful projects I can share with you that I have done in the past. Talking about your organization,  I believe I can unleash my creative potential here, leading to new heights.

Example

I like how your company stands out through its exciting designs. My experience of managing creative teams and building impactful visuals fits well with your goal of exploring creativity. I look forward to using my skills in a team that values imagination and creativity. I believe this job will help me grow in the areas of digital and experiential design.

3) What Are Your Career Goals?

Answer Formula: (Short term goal) + (Long term goal) + (Why This Job Helps You Get There)

Example

In the coming years, I want to explore digital design and branding more. In the long run, I want to transition into a Creative Director position, working with a high-end creative team. This position at (company name) will let me work with a skilled team on important creative projects, which I believe will help me accomplish my goal.

4) How Do You Communicate Effectively In A Hybrid/Remote Model?

Answer Formula: (Communication Tools) + (Why you use them) + (How It Helps)

Example

Previously, I have used Slack for text communication, Zoom for video meetings, and Asana for project management. While managing my team in previous companies, I also remained available for one-on-one check-ins to keep the connection alive and address any issues. This approach has helped our team to work at our best, even when we’re not physically in the same space.

5) Why Is There A Career Gap On Your Resume?

Answer Formula: (Honest Reason) + (How You Used the Time) + (Why You’re Ready Now)

Example

I took a break to focus on learning more about designing user experiences and creating moving graphics. It was getting tough to juggle learning with my job. But before that, I put in a lot of time and saw some solid success. After that, I figured it was time to pick up some new skills so I took a break. Now, I have returned to the full-time job model, looking forward to using my skills in a larger team where we can work together on creative projects.

6) What Are Your Weaknesses?

Example

I take on too much work myself because I want everything to be perfect. I am learning to trust my team and its abilities. I took workshops related to it as well. With practice, now I’m able to say goodbye to my old habit, making my workload easier.

7) Can You Share A Challenging Work Situation And How You Handled it?

Example

In my last company, we received a project with a very tight deadline. The client was also a high-paying one which further built pressure on my team to meet his expectations. Personally, I worked closely with the client, making mood boards and designing examples for them to review. With clear communication, me and my team finished the final design two days earlier than planned. The client was happy with the outcome and we retained that high-paying client for further projects.

8) What Would You Do If Your Team Couldn’t Meet Required Expectations?

Answer Formula: (Identify the Problem) + (Steps to Improve) + (How You Measure Success)

Example

I will see if it’s happening because of not having enough resources, not knowing what the goals are, or everyone not being on the same page about what needs to be done or any other issue. Then, I would come up with a practical solution. It could include things like offering additional training, clarifying expectations, or refining project timelines. Then I will review the results and check how much improvement we have made.

9) What’s Making You Leave Your Current Job?

Answer Formula: (What You Learned) + (What You Want Next) + (How This Job Fits)

Example

I have gained much experience in leading teams and managing big creative projects in my current job. Now, I am looking for a new challenge where I can help create the main ideas for a brand. I am excited about your organization because it focuses on innovative and impactful ideas that challenge traditional creativity.

10) What Are Your Salary Expectations?

Answer Formula: (Market Research) + (Provide a Range) + (Show Flexibility)

Example

From my experience and research on similar creative lead jobs, I am looking for a salary between [give them a range]. I’m open to proceeding with a discussion about the overall pay package, which includes other benefits and chances for growth.

11) Where Do You See Yourself In Five Years?

Answer Formula: (Future Role) + (How You’ll Get There) + (Why This Job Is the Right Step)

Example

I see myself as a Creative Director, leading a team to reach new heights and drive exceptional growth for the organization. To reach this goal, I will keep improving my leadership and design skills. This company is the perfect step for me to learn from industry leaders and work on high-end creative projects.

12) How Many Hours Will You Work Per Week?

Answer Formula: (Average Weekly Hours) + (Flexibility if Needed) +  (Focus on Efficiency)

Example

In the past, I have worked about 40 to 45 hours each week, but I can be flexible if the project needs more time. I love putting in the effort to do great work rather than just counting hours.

If HR asks you to share negative thoughts about something, do it thoughtfully and respectfully. Give the right reasons to explain your opinions and feelings. It’s okay to show your emotions, but try to dwell in them at the moment. Most importantly, be true to yourself and believe in what you say.
